Building Bridges through Asian American Literature

FEBRUARY 22, 2024

In celebration of Lunar New Year, the East West Bank Foundation, in collaboration with the Very Asian Foundation (VAF), delivered over 100 Asian American books to two Title 1 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District through the May Book Project.

VAF’s May Book Projects aims to enrich school libraries with diverse books that highlight Asian American culture. Members of East West Bank's Multicultural Awareness ERG, including Ana Chacon, Roger Huang, Sandy Ngan, Mei Ng, and Kenny Chan, engaged with over 400 students from Castelar Street Elementary School and Delevan Drive Elementary School by reading books written by Asian American authors. Accompanying them were actor Rich Ting, CBS correspondent Jo Ling Kent, and Gloo Books publisher Karen Chan. In addition to the reading sessions, students received a valuable lesson on financial literacy from East West Bank branch associates so they can learn about how to budget.

The bank takes pride in partnering with VAF to contribute to the development of an inclusive and high-quality collection of Asian American literature in local schools.
