Trinity I was created to celebrate the opening of East West Bank's Hong Kong office and exemplifies Su Xiaobai's distinctive approach to lacquer. Its elongated form recalls the curved shape of a traditional roof tile, while layers of lacquer, pigment, and linen create a richly textured surface that shifts with changing light. Built through a meticulous process of layering and reworking, the painting contains traces of earlier stages hidden beneath the visible surface. Rather than depicting an image, Trinity I focuses attention on material, color, and transformation, inviting viewers to slow down and engage with the work's physical presence.
