Michelle Kwan is a photorealistic oil painting that blends portraiture with text to explore themes of identity and representation. Responding to the racialized media coverage Kwan faced during her Olympic career, the work evokes the complicated logics within American society that continue to other and undermine the identity of Chinese Americans. By overlaying Chinese characters meaning "American," Wang prompts viewers to reconsider notions of belonging and national identity.
