Paving the Way for Students of Houston's Harmony School of Ingenuity

On Friday, January 16, 2015, East West Bank and the Houston Rockets celebrated its partnership with the Harmony School of Ingenuity in Houston, Texas. As an extension of the "Save Smart, Score Big" financial literacy sponsorship program, our bank donated $10,000 towards the school's Phase I project to build a new paved walkway with covered awning, creating a safer and more inviting learning environment for students. The students and staff can now enjoy this newly paved area for a variety of activities such as the school's Annual Fall Festival, athletic practices, after school pick-up and much more.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Clyde Drexler-Hall of Famer and Houston Rockets Legend, Corey Brewer-Houston Rockets Guard, Anh Duong-Assistant Principal of Harmony School of Ingenuity, were joined by Emily Wang, SVP-Director of Marketing and Community Development, Steve La Fredo, SVP-Commercial Lending Regional Manager, and Dennis Chuang, SVP-Regional Director of Eastern Region & Texas. The group celebrated the completion of a newly paved walkway for students, which is approximately 3,000 square feet, by leaving permanent handprints in cement that borders an engraved marble plaque marking the occasion. The awning project will begin at the end of the month.

"East West Bank is very pleased to continue our partnership with the Houston Rockets. Our "Save Smart, Score Big" financial literacy program has helped hundreds of students improve their knowledge in financial management and cultivate an early interest in financial responsibility. We are excited to approach our third year working with the Rockets to help local schools. In the first year, we donated $12,000 to McGregor Elementary School to support the purchase of brand new computers for their computer lab. As the second school to join the program, Harmony School of Ingenuity carries on the extension of the financial education sponsorship program where additional sponsorship funds will go towards building a covered awning to create a safer and more inviting learning environment", said Emily Wang, SVP-Director of Marketing and Community Development at East West Bank.

"It was always a great thing to invest in the future of young people and the education in financial literacy offered by East West Bank would mean a lot for their growth. Every time we invest in children, it means our future is well taken care of", said Rockets Legend Clyde Drexler.

"The investment in our students has far exceeded our expectations and we are extremely appreciative of the support. The partnership with East West Bank and the Houston Rockets started last year when our 6th graders participated in the "Save Smart, Score Big" program. East West Bank and the Houston Rockets came in and taught our students what it meant to have a savings and how to manage it. Our students have benefited greatly from these sessions. Not only did East West Bank contribute their time, but they also donated funds to help us with our dismissal area. The concrete pavement used to be grass and when it rained, the students got mud all over them. Now, the students can enter the building without getting muddy and soaked. East West Bank made it possible. We truly appreciate what East West Bank and the Houston Rockets have done to support the students", said Anh Duong, Assistant Principal of Harmony School of Ingenuity.
