Nevada team helps put women back on their feet with United Way
PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 7, 2014
Our Nevada team had a meaningful and memorable first community involvement at the United Way of Southern Nevada’s 7th annual Women’s Leadership Council “Women’s Fall Suit Drive.” Led by Janet Chao, Senior Vice President and Director of Nevada at East West Bank, team members volunteered and sorted over 11,000 pieces of donated clothing to put together professional attire for needy women. The suit drive, in its seventh year, has helped needy women from different backgrounds and ages to dress for success. Women’s Leadership Council has also raised $1.6 million in seven years to help disadvantaged individuals and communities in the area.
The volunteers gathered early in the morning on November 7, 2014 to sort and organize hangers of gently-used professional attire. These donations would be sent to organizations such as Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Goodwill Career Connections, S.A.F.E. House, Safe Nest, the Shade Tree shelter, and the Women’s Development and Work Opportunities Readiness centers of HELP of Southern Nevada to help put underprivileged women back on their feet. Throughout the day, cars arrived non-stop with donations that had been dropped off at the United Way. This year’s donations were phenomenal, with 11,941 items, breaking last year’s record of 7,084 items.
All the team members were excited and proud that each hanger they sorted created a story for a woman who would be starting a new life! Since the Nevada branch has been established for just under a year, they look forward to more opportunities to outreach further into the community.
