Age ain’t nothing but a number! Our associates recently volunteered to support the amazing senior athletes at the 27th Annual Pasadena Senior Games. Held at CalTech and hosted by the Pasadena Senior Center, the Games is the largest athletic event for the local senior community and features various track and field events such as 50M-1000M races, javelin, pole vault, discus, shot put, long jump and more. There was even an especially endearing grandparents’ relay race in which the athletes ran a relay race alongside their grandchildren!

“In the event’s 27-year history, this is the best meet we’ve had thanks to the East West Bank volunteers!” shared meet director Jim Hanley. Indeed, our nearly 40 volunteers helped ensure a smooth event by assisting referees with timing, measuring, setting/resetting each game, guiding the athletes, distributing water, and passing out medals.

The Games also left our volunteers awe-struck with performances from age-defying athletes such as 74-year-old world champion racewalker Darlene Backlund (the oldest woman to ever complete a 50K race), 92-year-old 50M runner Harry Hirakawa, 61-year-old World Masters champion gold medal jumper Peter Hlavin, and 68-year-old four-time world record holding shot-putter Quenton Torbert.

These senior athletes are a testament that it’s never too late to begin your health and fitness journey!
