Serving Those Who’ve Served Our Nation: Birdhouses & BBQ
PUBLISHED OCTOBER 5, 2019
What a relaxing and rewarding weekend! In partnership with United Way of Greater Los Angeles and New Directions for Veterans, our volunteers recently had an interactive and fun day serving veterans and their families at Veterans Village/Palos Verdes Apartments, two supportive housing developments in El Monte, CA.
The day of service began with our associates split into teams to engage in a variety of activities including helping veterans and their families create birdhouses to hang on their balconies, de-weeding the residents’ edible garden, cleaning out the community kitchen pantry, and beautifying a fence with faux ivy.
To top it off, our volunteers also prepared and grilled a delicious BBQ lunch for all the residents and their families. One veteran remarked, “…this is so therapeutic. I didn’t know people cared enough to come out and do this for us. I’m having a great time”.
It was our absolute joy to have the opportunity to hear these veterans’ stories and be able to give back to the men and women who sacrificed so much to serve our country.
